Stop! Assess what your needs are. Who do you want to become in 2, 5 or 10 years? What kind of person you want to be by then?
Grab a big piece of paper. Draw a big horizontal line. In the left tip, draw a zero and in the other one the age you think you will then enter to another dimension, or how it is usually said, die. Mark your age today, on that line. All right then, from age 0 until today, mark on this timeline all important happenings/events that had a huge impact defining who you are today.
Is there any feeling towards these events? If yes, write them down close to the event. Now, imagine those events in the timeline belong to someone else’s life.Question: when looking at those events, what is your first impression of that person?
Take some time to reflect on it. We are almost done. Now, imagine you are on the far right of the paper, looking back to your age now, our present moment, what events and situations you wished have happened? Write them down chronologically. Next to it, write why you wanted this so bad to happen. Again, grab the paper and look at it. Happy with the life you had? If not, what could you add between now and then (far right)? For each event, add the steps that will help you achieve these milestones and add a deadline to each one. This will help you understand the reason behind each decision.
There it is my friend! Stick it on your wall, take a picture of it and have it on your cell phone and laptop background. This is a dynamic timeline. Time to time, come back to it, analyse it as an external person, and ask: Is this person living the life they envisioned for themselves? Would I add anything to help them live their life to the fullest?
As the cherry on top of the cake, I will share with you a tip I learned in the book High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard. In one of the chapters of the book, he suggests to think of the person you want to become, let’s say in 3 years from now. Then set random alarms throughout the day and label these alarms with characteristics of the person you want to become in 3 years. When these alarms go on, ask yourself: What have I done to be one step closer to my future self?
