Different Opinions… Am I ok when Challenged?

Just recently I started a new semester. And with a new semester come new faces and new adversities.

Luckily in this one class, I knew one person! But in that class, she didn’t show up (only later). So I proceeded to sit in a corner of the classroom and began organizing my materials for the class.

A couple of minutes later a perfect stranger asked to sit next to me. I said yes, that being a busy class, somebody was eventually going to sit there.

Out of the blue, one thing led to the other and we started talking about the class, movies, tv shows, student life, work life, goals after college and personal relationships. The 2 hours class went by in a blink of an eye and I made a friend.

Why am I telling you this?

In a usual day, most of us, talk and are exposed to the same people and opinions we already have. This happens without us noticing. Google gives us more of what we already read, watched or researched. And unwillingly we are trapped with our own opinions. This doesn’t benefit any of us.

That conversation left a mark because Alexa (not her real name) could not be more different than me. I honestly believe we would have never met under other circumstances. We diverged in 90% of things, yet with an open dialog we were able to understand each other and had an excellent conversation. I believe that to each of our horizons were broadened.

When you find yourself stuck, try to do one of these:

  1. Ask for feedback (at work, school…);
  2. Ask for Help;
  3. Take a Online Course;
  4. Do something out of your comfort zone:
  5. 4.1. Go to a new place (ex: new coffee shop);
  6. 4.2. Change your TV Channel;
  7. 4.3. Try to read news from 2 different sources, so that you can hear 2 different points of views;
  8. 4.4. Chat with those who serve you (ex: cleaning lady, security officer…).

To sum up, in the modern world we tend to be every day more closed off in our own little world and opinion. This conversation reminded of how easily we can lose touch with other realities, no more.

Kind regards,
