Asking Shouldn’t Be a Hard Thing To Do!

Asking is our right. Therefore, we should all do it. Just Ask!

Sometimes, to get what we want or need, all we need to do is ask. So why shouldn’t we?
Asking may not be an easy thing to do. The good news is, it doesn’t always have to be like that. The more you ask, the easier it gets. I’m really passionate about the power of asking. And every time I meet someone, I ask them what are the main reasons why they don’t ask.

The most common answers are:

  1. Fear of receiving a “No!”;
  2. They don’t want others to perceive them as weak;
  3. They don’t want to look needy or greedy.

Because of the above-mentioned reasons (and many more), we risk losing many opportunities in our lives. When we ask, we are being vulnerable. It takes a lot of courage to be vulnerable. Thus, people appreciate when we show our vulnerable side. And the benefits of asking are endless. We may not have the “Yes” we wanted at first, but that “No” will lead us to the next question, till we finally get what we want.

“Problems are not stop signs. They are guidelines.” — Robert Schuller

The power of asking is not something we hear every day in the news, podcasts or motivational videos. In the other hand, through my speaking career, I realized that most people don’t ask.

I have a speech called “Just Ask!”. This speech shares a personal story of mine. Where through the power of asking I got to attend Robin Sharma’s talk in Lisbon, as a special guest. At the time there was no way I could afford the ticket. And how did I managed to attend the event? I just asked?

“Dear Robin, My name is Lerio. I’m a Mozambican living in Lisbon and I read all your books. I know you will be holding a talk in Lisbon… but due to financial reasons, I won’t be able to see you. As I learned in your books we shouldn’t be afraid to ask for the things we want.
So here I am, Asking You, if there is a chance to see you! Regards, Lério.” — Excerpt from “Just Ask!” speech by Lerio Cunha

Those who hear this story, often thank me for reminding them that they should ask for what they want and need. Or that asking shouldn’t be a hard thing to do.

So, my dear reader…I dare you: Just Ask!!!

As we’re getting to the end of the article, here is my Ask to You. Think of something you would like to ask, but for some reason, you have not done yet so. After this, you will reflect on why you want to ask that question. Reflecting on the “why” will help you to be more specific when the time to ask comes. Do you have the why? Yes? Ok. Last but not least, think: Who could help you be better prepared for the ask? For instance, if you would like to ask your boss for a raise: Who could help you? So that when you do ask for the raise you are sharp as a blade and ready for it.

Kind regards,

Lerio & Miguel
